Bible for the Palm Pilot

There are now two versions of the Hebrew Bible for the Palm Pilot:  The first is our masoretic Hebrew text of the Bible according to the Aleppo Codex and the other manuscripts close to it; it is a conversion of our Hebrew Bible in masoretic spelling (this is in the classical spelling as in printed Bibles--without the vowels, however, which are not yet generally supported on the Palm Pilot).  The second is our modern full-spelling version of the Hebrew Bible; it is a conversion of our Hebrew Bible in full spelling (this is in the modern spelling as found in books and newspapers, which is easier for non-experts to read, but generally not according to the tastes of Bible experts).

NOTE:  These files require both Hebrew support and the iSilo Palm Pilot reader; the TealDoc reader cannot read these files, but the iSilo reader can read TealDoc files.

There are two Hebrew versions here, because we discovered that there are two somewhat different systems of Hebrew support for the Palm Pilot with slightly different handing of our texts; until a single standard is adopted, we are providing files for each system separately.  You should take care to get what is right for your Palm Pilot's Hebrew support.  If you are not sure what to get, just try getting a file from either system and check how the braces {x} look:  if they look OK (not backwards like }x{), you got the right kind of file; if not, you got the wrong kind and need to download the other kind of file.

By the way, the letters in braces are symbols of paragraphing according to the masorah, which are critical in the validity of a Torah scroll (we use English names of the Hebrew letters, so that Hebrew support is not needed in your browser here):

• {Peh}  "Petuhah"--there is a big space to the end of the line and the next word starts a new line.
• {Samekh}  "Setumah"--there is a big space before next word on the same line.
• {Resh}  The preceding word is justified to the left and the next word is at the start of the next line; different from Petuhah in that there the preceding word is remote from the left margin.  This is used in the "songs", such as Shirat haYam.  This is not a traditional sign, and it has no name yet.
• {Shin}  There is at least one blank line before the next paragraph.  This is used to set off songs and to separate the books with several blank lines.  This is not a traditional sign, and it has no name yet either.

Be sure not to forget to get the iSilo Palm Pilot reader for browsing our files, before trying to use them.  You now have two choices:  either download the latest version from the iSilo site or the old iSilo free version from here.  The old free version cannot do global searches and cannot use the extra memory on expansion cards found on the newer machines.  The latest version, on the other hand, can do these things and more, even if not paid for (for details on additional features, see the iSilo site); but it is a "trial version" ($20 shareware) that will automatically turn itself into a freeware version after 30 days use, if no registration code is entered.
