Positive Commandments

à  îÄöÀåÈä øÄàùÑåÉðÈä îÄîÌÄöÀååÉú òÂùÒÅä, ìÅéãÇò ùÑÆéÌÅùÑ ùÑÈí àÁìåÉäÌÇ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "àÈðÉëÄé ä' àÁìÉäÆéêÈ" (ùîåú ë,á; ãáøéí ä,å). 1  The first of the positive commandments is to know that there exists God, as it is written "I am the LORD, thy God" (Exodus 20,2; Deuteronomy 5,6).
á  ìÀéÇçÂãåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ä' àÁìÉäÅéðåÌ, ä' àÆçÈã" (ãáøéí å,ã). 2  To acknowledge His Oneness, as it is written "the LORD our God, the LORD is One" (Deuteronomy 6,4).
â  ìÀàÈäÃáåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀàÈäÇáÀúÌÈ, àÅú ä' àÁìÉäÆéêÈ" (ãáøéí å,ä; ãáøéí éà,à). 3  To love Him, as it is written "and thou shalt love the LORD thy God" (Deuteronomy 6,5; Deuteronomy 11,1).
ã  ìÀéÄøÀàÈä îÄîÌÆðÌåÌ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "àÆú-ä' àÁìÉäÆéêÈ úÌÄéøÈà" (ãáøéí å,éâ; ãáøéí é,ë). 4  To fear Him, as it is written "thou shalt fear the LORD thy God" (Deuteronomy 6,13; Deuteronomy 10,20).
ä  ìÀäÄúÀôÌÇìÌÇì ìåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÇòÂáÇãÀúÌÆí, àÅú ä' àÁìÉäÅéëÆí" (ùîåú ëâ,ëä); òÂáåÉãÈä æåÉ úÌÀôÄìÌÈä. 5  To pray to Him, as it is written "and ye shall serve the LORD your God" (Exodus 23,25); this service is prayer.
å  ìÀãÈáÀ÷Èä áÌåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáåÉ úÄãÀáÌÈ÷" (ãáøéí é,ë). 6  To cleave to Him, as it is written "and to Him shalt thou cleave" (Deuteronomy 10,20).
æ  ìÀäÄùÌÑÈáÇò áÌÄùÑÀîåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÄùÑÀîåÉ, úÌÄùÌÑÈáÅòÇ" (ãáøéí å,éâ; ãáøéí é,ë). 7  To swear by His Name, as it is written "and by His name, shalt thou swear" (Deuteronomy 6,13; Deuteronomy 10,20).
ç  ìÀäÄãÌÇîÌåÉú áÌÄãÀøÈëÈéå äÇèÌåÉáÄéí åÀäÇéÌÀùÑÈøÄéí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀäÈìÇëÀúÌÈ, áÌÄãÀøÈëÈéå" (ãáøéí ëç,è). 8  To imitate His good and upright ways, as it is written "and walk in His ways" (Deuteronomy 28,9).
è  ìÀ÷ÇãÌÇùÑ ùÑÀîåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀðÄ÷ÀãÌÇùÑÀúÌÄé, áÌÀúåÉêÀ áÌÀðÅé éÄùÒÀøÈàÅì" (åé÷øà ëá,ìá). 9  To sanctify His Name, as it is written "but I will be hallowed among the Children of Israel" (Leviticus 22,32).
é  ìÄ÷ÀøåÉú ÷ÄøÀéÇú ùÑÀîÇò ôÌÇòÂîÇéÄí áÌÀëÈì éåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀãÄáÌÇøÀúÌÈ áÌÈí . . . åÌáÀùÑÈëÀáÌÀêÈ åÌáÀ÷åÌîÆêÈ" (ãáøéí å,æ). 10  To recite the Shema` twice daily, as it is written "and thou shalt talk of them . . . when thou liest down, and when thou risest up" (Deuteronomy 6,7).
éà  ìÄìÀîÉã úÌåÉøÈä åÌìÀìÇîÌÀãÈäÌ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀùÑÄðÌÇðÀúÌÈí ìÀáÈðÆéêÈ" (ãáøéí å,æ). 11  To learn Torah and to teach it, as it is written "thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children" (Deuteronomy 6,7).
éá  ìÄ÷ÀùÑÉø úÌÀôÄìÌÄéï áÌÈøÉàùÑ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀäÈéåÌ ìÀèÉèÈôÉú, áÌÅéï òÅéðÆéêÈ" (ãáøéí å,ç). 12  To bind tefillin on the head, as it is written "and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes" (Deuteronomy 6,8).
éâ  ìÄ÷ÀùÑÉø úÌÀôÄìÌÄéï áÌÇéÌÈã, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌ÷ÀùÑÇøÀúÌÈí ìÀàåÉú, òÇì-éÈãÆêÈ" (ãáøéí å,ç). 13  To bind tefillin on the arm, as it is written "and thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand" (Deuteronomy 6,8).
éã  ìÇòÂùÒåÉú öÄéöÄéú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀòÈùÒåÌ ìÈäÆí öÄéöÄú" (áîãáø èå,ìç). 14  To make tzitzit, as it is written "and they shall make for themselves fringes" (Numbers 15,38).
èå  ìÄ÷ÀáÌÉòÇ îÀæåÌæÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌëÀúÇáÀúÌÈí òÇì-îÀæËæåÉú" (ãáøéí å,è; ãáøéí éà,ë). 15  To fasten a mezuzah, as it is written "and thou shalt write them upon the door-posts" (Deuteronomy 6,9; Deuteronomy 11,20).
èæ  ìÀäÇ÷ÀäÄéì àÆú äÈòÈí ìÄùÑÀîÉòÇ úÌåÉøÈä áÌÀîåÉöÈàÅé ùÑÀáÄéòÄéú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "äÇ÷ÀäÅì àÆú-äÈòÈí" (ãáøéí ìà,éá). 16  To assemble the people to hear Torah after the end of the Sabbatical year, as it is written "assemble the people" (Deuteronomy 31,12).
éæ  ìÄëÀúÌÉá ëÌÈì àÄéùÑ ñÅôÆø úÌåÉøÈä ìÀòÇöÀîåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ëÌÄúÀáåÌ ìÈëÆí àÆú-äÇùÌÑÄéøÈä äÇæÌÉàú" (ãáøéí ìà,éè). 17  For each man to write a Torah scroll for himself, as it is written "write ye this song for you" (Deuteronomy 31,19).
éç  ìÄëÀúÌÉá äÇîÌÆìÆêÀ ñÅôÆø úÌåÉøÈä ìÀòÇöÀîåÉ, éÈúÅø òÇì äÈàÆçÈã ùÑÆìÌÀëÈì àÈãÈí, òÇã ùÑÆéÌÄäÀéÆä ìåÉ ùÑÀúÌÅé úÌåÉøåÉú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀëÈúÇá ìåÉ àÆú-îÄùÑÀðÅä äÇúÌåÉøÈä äÇæÌÉàú" (ãáøéí éæ,éç). 18  For the king to write a Torah scroll for himself, besides the one for every man, so that he shall have two Torah scrolls, as it is written "and he shall write for himself a copy of this Torah" (Deuteronomy 17,18).
éè  ìÀáÈøÇêÀ àÇçÇø äÇîÌÈæåÉï, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀàÈëÇìÀúÌÈ, åÀùÒÈáÈòÀúÌÈ--åÌáÅøÇëÀúÌÈ" (ãáøéí ç,é). 19  To say a blessing after meals, as it is written "thou shalt eat and be satisfied, and bless" (Deuteronomy 8,10).
ë  ìÄáÀðåÉú áÌÅéú äÇáÌÀçÄéøÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀòÈùÒåÌ ìÄé, îÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑ" (ùîåú ëä,ç). 20  To build the Sanctuary, as it is written "and they shall make Me a sanctuary" (Exodus 25,8).
ëà  ìÀéÄøÀàÈä îÄáÌÇéÄú æÆä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌîÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑÄé úÌÄéøÈàåÌ" (åé÷øà éè,ì; åé÷øà ëå,á). 21  To revere this house, as it is written "and reverence My sanctuary" (Leviticus 19,30; Leviticus 26,2).
ëá  ìÄùÑÀîÉø áÌÇéÄú æÆä úÌÈîÄéã, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀàÇúÌÈä åÌáÈðÆéêÈ àÄúÌÈêÀ, ìÄôÀðÅé àÉäÆì äÈòÅãËú" (áîãáø éç,á). 22  To stand guard over this house perpetually, as it is written "thou and thy sons with thee being before the tent of the testimony" (Numbers 18,2).
ëâ  ìÄäÀéåÉú äÇìÌÅåÄé òåÉáÅã áÌÇîÌÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀòÈáÇã äÇìÌÅåÄé äåÌà" (áîãáø éç,ëâ). 23  For the Levite to serve in the Temple, as it is written "and the Levite alone shall serve" (Numbers 18,23).
ëã  ìÀ÷ÇãÌÇùÑ äÇëÌåÉäÅï éÈãÈéå åÀøÇâÀìÈéå áÌÀùÑÈòÇú äÈòÂáåÉãÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀøÈçÂöåÌ àÇäÂøÉï åÌáÈðÈéå . . ." (ùîåú ì,éè). 24  For the Priest to sanctify his hands and feet at the time of service, as it is written "and Aharon and his sons shall wash . . ." (Exodus 30,19).
ëä  ìÇòÂøÉêÀ ðÅøåÉú áÌÇîÌÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "éÇòÂøÉêÀ àÉúåÉ àÇäÂøÉï åÌáÈðÈéå" (ùîåú ëæ,ëà). 25  To arrange lamps in the Temple, as it is written "Aharon and his sons shall set it in order" (Exodus 27,21).
ëå  ìÀáÈøÇêÀ äÇëÌåÉäÂðÄéí àÆú éÄùÒÀøÈàÅì, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ëÌÉä úÀáÈøÀëåÌ àÆú-áÌÀðÅé éÄùÒÀøÈàÅì" (áîãáø å,ëâ). 26  For the Priests to bless Israel, as it is written "thus shall ye bless the Children of Israel" (Numbers 6,23).
ëæ  ìÀäÇñÀãÌÄéø ìÆçÆí åÌìÀáåÉðÈä ìÄôÀðÅé ä' áÌÀëÈì ùÑÇáÌÈú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀðÈúÇúÌÈ òÇì-äÇùÌÑËìÀçÈï ìÆçÆí ôÌÈðÄéí" (ùîåú ëä,ì). 27  To set in order bread and frankincense before the LORD every Sabbath, as it is written "thou shalt set upon the table showbread" (Exodus 25,30).
ëç  ìÀäÇ÷ÀèÄéø ÷ÀèÉøÆú ôÌÇòÂîÇéÄí áÌÇéÌåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀäÄ÷ÀèÄéø òÈìÈéå àÇäÂøÉï, ÷ÀèÉøÆú ñÇîÌÄéí" (ùîåú ì,æ). 28  To burn incense twice daily, as it is written "and Aharon shall burn thereon incense of sweet spices" (Exodus 30,7).
ëè  ìÇòÂøÉêÀ àÅùÑ áÌÀîÄæÀáÌÇç äÈòåÉìÈä úÌÈîÄéã, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "àÅùÑ, úÌÈîÄéã úÌåÌ÷Çã òÇì-äÇîÌÄæÀáÌÅçÇ" (åé÷øà å,å). 29  To arrange a fire perpetually on the Altar of the Burnt Offering, as it is written "fire shall be kept burning upon the altar continually" (Leviticus 6,6).
ì  ìÀäÈøÄéí äÇãÌÆùÑÆï îÅòÇì äÇîÌÄæÀáÌÅçÇ áÌÀëÈì éåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀäÅøÄéí àÆú-äÇãÌÆùÑÆï" (åé÷øà å,â). 30  To remove the ashes from upon the Altar daily, as it is written "and he shall take up the ashes" (Leviticus 6,3).
ìà  ìÀùÑÇìÌÇç èÀîÅàÄéí îÄîÌÇçÂðÅä ùÑÀëÄéðÈä ùÑÀäåÌà äÇîÌÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÄéùÑÇìÌÀçåÌ îÄï-äÇîÌÇçÂðÆä, ëÌÈì-öÈøåÌòÇ åÀëÈì-æÈá" (áîãáø ä,á). 31  To send the unclean out of the Camp of the Holy Presence, that is, the Temple, as it is written "that they put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath a defiling issue" (Numbers 5,2).
ìá  ìÇçÀìÉ÷ ëÌÈáåÉã ìÀæÇøÀòåÉ ùÑÆìÌÀàÇäÂøåÉï åÌìÀäÇ÷ÀãÌÄéîåÉ ìÀëÈì ãÌÈáÈø ùÑÆáÌÄ÷ÀãËùÌÑÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀ÷ÄãÌÇùÑÀúÌåÉ" (åé÷øà ëà,ç). 32  To show honor to the offspring of Aharon and to give him priority in all things holy, as it is written "and thou shalt sanctify him" (Leviticus 21,8).
ìâ  ìÄäÀéåÉú äÇëÌåÉäÂðÄéí ìåÉáÀùÑÄéí ìÈòÂáåÉãÈä áÌÄâÀãÅé ëÌÀäËðÌÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀòÈùÒÄéúÈ áÄâÀãÅé-÷ÉãÆùÑ" (ùîåú ëç,á). 33  For the Priests to wear priestly garments for their service, as it is written "and thou shalt make holy garments" (Exodus 28,2).
ìã  ìÈùÒÅàú äÈàÈøåÉï òÇì äÇëÌÈúÅó ëÌÀùÑÆðÌåÉùÒÀàÄéï àåÉúåÉ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "áÌÇëÌÈúÅó éÄùÌÒÈàåÌ" (áîãáø æ,è). 34  To bear the Ark on the shoulder when carrying it, as it is written "they shall bear upon the shoulder" (Numbers 7,9).
ìä  ìÄîÀùÑÉçÇ ëÌåÉäÂðÄéí âÌÀãåÉìÄéí åÌîÀìÈëÄéí áÌÀùÑÆîÆï äÇîÌÄùÑÀçÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ùÑÆîÆï îÄùÑÀçÇú-÷ÉãÆùÑ éÄäÀéÆä æÆä" (ùîåú ì,ìà). 35  To anoint high priests and kings with the anointing oil, as it is written "this shall be a holy anointing oil" (Exodus 30,31).
ìå  ìÄäÀéåÉú äÇëÌåÉäÂðÄéí òåÉáÀãÄéï áÌÇîÌÄ÷ÀãÌÈùÑ îÄùÑÀîÈøåÉú îÄùÑÀîÈøåÉú, åÌáÇîÌåÉòÂãÄéí òåÉáÀãÄéï ëÌÀàÆçÈã, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀëÄé-éÈáÉà äÇìÌÅåÄé . . ." (ãáøéí éç,å) "ìÀáÇã îÄîÀëÌÈøÈéå, òÇì-äÈàÈáåÉú" (ãáøéí éç,ç). 36  For the Priests to serve in the Temple in divisions, but on festivals to serve together, as it is written "and if a Levite come . . ." (Deuteronomy 18,6) "beside that which is his due according to the fathers' houses" (Deuteronomy 18,8).
ìæ  ìÄäÀéåÉú äÇëÌåÉäÂðÄéí îÄèÌÇîÌÅàÄéï ìÄ÷ÀøåÉáÅéäÆí åÌîÄúÀàÇáÌÀìÄéï òÂìÅéäÆï ëÌÄùÑÀàÈø éÄùÒÀøÈàÅì ùÑÀäÆï îÀöËåÌÄéï ìÀäÄúÀàÇáÌÇì òÇì îÅúÅéäÆï, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ìÈäÌ, éÄèÌÇîÌÈà" (åé÷øà ëà,â). 37  For the Priests to become unclean for their deceased relatives and mourn for them like the rest of Israel who are commanded to mourn for their dead, as it is written "for her, he shall defile himself" (Leviticus 21,3).
ìç  ìÄäÀéåÉú ëÌåÉäÅï âÌÈãåÉì ðåÉùÒÅà áÌÀúåÌìÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÀäåÌà, àÄùÌÑÈä áÄáÀúåÌìÆéäÈ éÄ÷ÌÈç" (åé÷øà ëà,éâ). 38  For the High Priest to marry a virgin, as it is written "and he shall take a wife in her virginity" (Leviticus 21,13).
ìè  ìÀäÇ÷ÀøÄéá úÌÀîÄéãÄéï áÌÀëÈì éåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ùÑÀðÇéÄí ìÇéÌåÉí, òÉìÈä úÈîÄéã" (áîãáø ëç,â). 39  To offer the perpetual sacrifices daily, as it is written "two a day, for a continual burnt-offering" (Numbers 28,3).
î  ìÀäÇ÷ÀøÄéá ëÌåÉäÅï âÌÈãåÉì îÄðÀçÈä áÌÀëÈì éåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "æÆä ÷ÈøÀáÌÇï àÇäÂøÉï åÌáÈðÈéå" (åé÷øà å,éâ). 40  For the High Priest to offer a meal offering daily, as it is written "this is the offering of Aharon and of his sons" (Leviticus 6,13).
îà  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï àÇçÅø áÌÀëÈì ùÑÇáÌÈú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÀéåÉí, äÇùÌÑÇáÌÈú--ùÑÀðÅé-ëÀáÈùÒÄéí" (áîãáø ëç,è). 41  To offer an additional sacrifice every Sabbath, as it is written "and on the Sabbath day, two he-lambs" (Numbers 28,9).
îá  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï áÌÀëÈì øÉàùÑ çÉãÆùÑ åÀçÉãÆùÑ, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÀøÈàùÑÅé, çÈãÀùÑÅéëÆí" (áîãáø ëç,éà). 42  To offer an additional sacrifice at the beginning of each new month, as it is written "and in your new moons" (Numbers 28,11).
îâ  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï áÌÀçÇâ äÇôÌÆñÇç, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "ùÑÄáÀòÇú éÈîÄéí, úÌÇ÷ÀøÄéáåÌ àÄùÌÑÆä ìÇä'" (åé÷øà ëâ,ìå). 43  To offer an additional sacrifice during the Festival of Pesach, as it is written "seven days ye shall bring an offering made by fire" (Leviticus 23,36).
îã  ìÀäÇ÷ÀøÄéá îÄðÀçÇú äÈòÉîÆø îÄîÌÈçÃøÇú øÄàùÑåÉï ùÑÆìÌÇôÌÆñÇç òÄí ëÌÆáÆùÒ àÆçÈã, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÇäÂáÅàúÆí àÆú-òÉîÆø" (åé÷øà ëâ,é). 44  To bring the meal offering of the Omer on the day after the first day of Pesach together with one lamb, as it is written "then ye shall bring an Omer" (Leviticus 23,10).
îä  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï áÌÀéåÉí òÂöÆøÆú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÀéåÉí äÇáÌÄëÌåÌøÄéí . . . åÀäÄ÷ÀøÇáÀúÌÆí òåÉìÈä" (áîãáø ëç,ëå-ëæ). 45  To offer an additional sacrifice on the Festival of Shavu`ot, as it is written "and in the day of the first-fruits . . . and ye shall present a burnt-offering" (Numbers 28,26-27).
îå  ìÀäÈáÄéà ùÑÀúÌÅé äÇìÌÆçÆí òÄí äÇ÷ÌÈøÀáÌÈðåÉú äÇ÷ÌÀøÅáÄéï áÌÄâÀìÇì äÇìÌÆçÆí áÌÀéåÉí òÂöÆøÆú, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "îÄîÌåÉùÑÀáÉúÅéëÆí úÌÈáÄéàÌåÌ ìÆçÆí úÌÀðåÌôÈä . . . åÀäÄ÷ÀøÇáÀúÌÆí òÇì-äÇìÌÆçÆí" (åé÷øà ëâ,éæ-éç). 46  To bring two loaves of bread together with the sacrifices that are offered because of the loaves on the Festival of Shavu`ot, as it is written "ye shall bring out of your dwelling places wave loaves . . . and ye shall present sacrifices with the bread" (Leviticus 23,17-18).
îæ  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï áÌÀøÉàùÑ äÇùÌÑÈðÈä, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÇçÉãÆùÑ äÇùÌÑÀáÄéòÄé áÌÀàÆçÈã ìÇçÉãÆùÑ . . . åÇòÂùÒÄéúÆí òÉìÈä" (áîãáø ëè,à-á). 47  To offer an additional sacrifice on Rosh Hashanah, as it is written "and in the seventh month, on the first day of the month . . . and ye shall prepare a burnt-offering" (Numbers 29,1-2).
îç  ìÀäåÉñÄéó ÷ÈøÀáÌÈï áÌÀéåÉí äÇöÌåÉí, ùÑÆðÌÆàÁîÈø "åÌáÆòÈùÒåÉø ìÇçÉãÆùÑ äÇùÌÑÀáÄéòÄé . . ." (áîãáø ëè,æ). 48  To offer an additional sacrifice on the Day of the Fast, as it is written "and on the tenth day of this seventh month . . ." (Numbers 29,7).
